Safran Electronics & Defense Delivers Its 2,500th Geonyx™ Inertial Navigation System
Enforce TAC, Nuremberg, Germany – February 23, 2026 – Safran Electronics & Defense is proud to announce the delivery of its 2,500th Geonyx™ inertial navigation system. This milestone marks a significant achievement for this high-precision Positioning, Navigation & Timing (PNT) solution, specifically designed to operate reliably in GNSS-denied and harsh environments.
Designed for Modern Land Combat Platforms
Geonyx™ addresses a wide range of applications including navigation, targeting (geolocation of targets), and artillery pointing in GNSS-denied environments. It is primarily intended for military land platforms such as light and heavy armored vehicles, towed or truck-mounted artillery systems, mortars, mobile radars, long-range optronic systems – all systems that require robust and high-performance PNT coherence.
Two Decades of HRG Technological Leadership
Geonyx™ is part of Safran’s technological commitment launched more two decades ago around the HRG (Hemispherical Resonator Gyro). At a time when the market was dominated by RLG (Ring Laser Gyros) and FOG (Fiber Optic Gyros) technologies, Safran invested in this vibratory technology – featuring no rotating parts and extremely low drift – initially intended for space and strategic applications requiring long-term stability and strong environmental robustness.
Industrialized through the HRG Crystal™ family, this technology has progressively gained maturity, compactness, and competitiveness.
From Strategic Technology to Tactical Battlefield Deployment
Already active in the land segment with the Sigma 30 (RLG), Safran Electronics & Defense adapted HRG technology to meet the evolving needs of the modern battlefield: resilience to GNSS jamming, rapid autonomous alignment, and reduced deployment time. Geonyx™ was therefore launched in 2018 at Eurosatory, marking the controlled transfer of a historically strategic technology to the tactical and operational land domain. Thanks to HRG Crystal™ technology, Geonyx™ is unaffected by vibrations and shocks of artillery systems, giving a virtually unlimited maintenance-free lifespan.
“The delivery of the 2,500th Geonyx™ system demonstrates Safran’s long-term commitment to sovereign, resilient navigation solutions,” said Julien Auger, Product Manager at Safran Electronics & Defense. “Geonyx™ provides guaranteed performance and reliability over the full life cycle of critical weapon systems, even in the most contested GNSS environments.”
Expanding Capabilities: Maritime Platforms and NAVWAR Resilience
In 2021, Geonyx™M expanded the offering to amphibious platforms and fast boats – including light patrol boats, landing crafts, littoral units- providing strong PNT resilience, true north alignment capability, and stabilized performance ; the latest addition of the NAVWAR option further strengthens its resilience against jamming, spoofing and meaconing, enhancing end-user confidence.
Industrial Excellence Supporting 35 Armed Forces Worldwide
100% produced “in-house”, Geonyx™ reflects Safran Electronics & Defense industrial excellence. Safran Electronics & Defense now supports more than 35 armed forces worldwide throughout the full lifecycle of their platforms.
